CSULB to post no parking signs where parking is allowed

Cal State Long Beach plans to post “no student parking” signs where students are allowed to park.

CSULB will post the signs in front of areas where there are preferential parking districts, said Mark Rudometkin, associate director of Parking and Transportation. However, surrounding preferential parking districts allow students to park there for one to three hours.

Rudometkin said the university is doing this to show good faith to the area residents. When told that the districts allow students to park there for certain amounts of time, he said, “It’s a residential area, so technically it’s not a student parking area.”

Preferential parking districts restrict the amount of time someone may park there. The only way to get around these restrictions is to have a permit that is only available to residents.

“It’s a way for residents to recapture their neighborhoods from being inundated from student parking,” Long Beach Traffic Engineer David Roseman told Beach News last year.

The preferential parking districts extend about a quarter mile into the neighborhood along Atherton Street. These residential streets allow students and any other non-residents to park in the area for up to two hours.

Recently, the neighborhood’s Marita Street was zoned for preferential parking. In a Beach News report last year, the street’s residents said that students parked in front of their driveways, therefore, forcing them to park their own vehicles a couple of blocks from their homes.

Another residential area to avoid is the neighborhood opposite CSULB on Palo Verde Avenue. Much of this area is also zoned for preferential parking.

Students used to have more off-campus parking on Atherton Street in front of CSULB. However, the city of Long Beach took away much of this parking last year, since it wanted to provide a lane for bicyclists.

The bright side is that the choices for on-campus parking have increased in recent years with the opening of Parking Structure 3 on the east side of campus. There are also metered parking spaces around campus and faculty parking lots on the weekends.

A student-parking permit for the fall 2010 semester costs $123 for automobiles and $30 for motorcycles. You can purchase it only online through your MyCSULB account.
