Thriving recreation center, already dead grass

The new Student Recreation and Wellness Center is a state-of-the-art building that requires much attention, but yellow, dry grass has appeared after recently being planted outside the building.

Physical Planning’s grounds manager, Brian McKinnon, said the dry patches in the newly installed grass are normal when acclimating new sod, a process that usually takes about three months. The grass is watered three times a day to improve its condition. McKinnon said that it will not need to be replaced.

All of the new construction, including the grass, is under warranty. Anything needing to be replaced will be covered.

Construction for the recreation center has been completed, but the area is still under the supervision of the building contractor for a 90-day period, ending Oct. 31. Associated Students, Inc. will begin operating the facility on Nov. 1.

The recreation center was fully operational starting Aug. 30. That was early enough to fulfill its deadline to open, according to senior construction manager Mark Zakhour. Students are able to utilize the facility after a registration process that includes a hand scan.

“It’s nice to have somewhere to workout free during the offseason,” said Hope Rolison, a freshman exercise major.

A grand opening for the new facility will take place, but the date has not yet been scheduled.
