CSULB philanthropist E. James Brotman dies

A philanthropist who had a campus building named after him has died.

E. James Brotman, from which Brotman Hall gets its name, died Aug. 30. He was 93. Cal State Long Beach President F. King Alexander made the announcement via an e-mail to students.

“It is with great regret that I inform you that our campus has lost an extremely generous benefactor early last week,” Alexander wrote.

According to an article by The Beach Review, Brotman began donating money to the university after watching a “60 Minutes” segment where a petroleum executive told children he’d pay their way through college if they graduated.

“So I looked around to see where I could do the most good with $10,000 and Cal State Long Beach tuition was so that I could put five students a year into the program,” Brotman told The Beach Review.

A legacy of the former physician was the Brotman Scholars Program. Alexander said that Brotman’s legacy makes its presence felt there.

“His endowment continues to provide full tuition support to academically talented, financially needy students pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees in science and mathematics,” Alexander wrote.
