Grant money available to student groups

More than $60,000 is still available for grants to student organizations this academic year, according to Associated Students, Inc. Treasurer Jameson Nyeholt.

ASI allocates money for student-run events each summer, fall and spring period.

Nyeholt said more funds came in due to a decision that allowed ASI to charge an Associated Students fee to those taking summer classes.

“Because of the chancellor’s office decision on summer fees, we had more money that came in and we were able to make that available,” Nyeholt said. “That [money] has been reallocated and is now in the proper places.”

The money is available to student organizations known as “at-large,” or those that are not affiliated with college councils. Groups that have had funds approved this semester include the salsa club and Invisible Children club.

Students must submit a detailed application with the costs of the event spelled-out ¬— from equipment rental to refreshments¬ — and the ASI Board of Control scores and deliberates on the events’ worthiness.

Organizations that wish to apply for event grants can visit University Student Union room 229 for more information.

“If someone wants to have an event, they should come here [to the Board of Control],” Nyeholt said. “It’s their money and they should be using it.”

The ASI Board of Control meets every Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in USU, room 324. The meetings are open to all students, who may air their views in a public comments period.
