At least they want books
During the summer, a professor’s instructor textbooks were stolen from the Academic Services building room 226. The door had been secured some time at the end of July. When the professor returned to the office on Aug. 25, dozens of books, valued at $3,500 had been stolen. University Police declined to give any information regarding how someone may have broken into the room.
In a non-related incident, 47 textbooks were stolen from the Associated Students, Inc. office lobby in rooms 201 and 208. The rooms attached to the public lobby were open when the unknown suspect walked into the rooms and stole a variety of textbooks from the bookshelves on the northwest corner. The total estimated loss is valued at $1,000. University Police have forwarded both cases to investigations.
One more toke over the line
Several more marijuana-related incidents have been reported since the first week of the semester when seven marijuana citations were issued. On Sept. 1, “housing staff believed someone was smoking in a room” at the Parkside Commons, University Police Capt. Fernando Solorzano said. Once police arrived, a male and a female student were issued judicial citations and citations for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana.
On Sept. 2, housing staff reported smelling a marijuana odor in Beach Hall. University Police issued a citation to a female resident for marijuana possession less than one ounce and issued her a judicial affairs citation.
On Sept. 4, a police officer on patrol noticed a Toyota Tacoma parked at an “unusual” angle, Solorzano said. The officer stepped out of his vehicle to investigate the truck and, as he approached, he smelt a “strong odor” of marijuana, he said. The male student was issued a marijuana-possession-under-one-ounce citation and a judicial affairs citation.
On Sept. 6, housing staff reported a marijuana odor coming from the third floor in the Pacific Hall at the Residential Learning College. University Police issued a male student a citation for marijuana possession less than one ounce and issued him a judicial affairs citation.
What the truck?
A male student’s 2003 Chevrolet Silverado was burglarized, losing an estimated $3,575 in property loss and general damages. Police said on Sept. 8, the student parked his vehicle in Parking Structure 2 on the fourth floor at 11 a.m. When the student returned at 5 p.m., an unknown suspect had forcefully gone into the vehicle and stole several items from the vehicle’s dashboard; a stereo that had a TV attached to it, a 16-gigabyte iPod and a wiring harness, which totaled $2875. The other damages totaled an estimated $1,000.
You are all diseased
Seventeen medical-related incidents have been reported on the University Police activity log since the semester began. Some incidents include a non-student being struck by a vehicle, a staff member being struck by a skateboarder and a female vomiting at Parkside Commons. Many other medical calls have come from various areas on campus. Due to patient privacy, further information may not be disclosed.
Frat-tastic
Multiple judicial affairs citations have been issued to fraternity members across Long Beach for loud, party calls in the last few weeks. Three fraternity houses received loud party calls during the second week of school and two received loud, party calls during the first week of the semester.
On a non-related issue, the Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority received a disturbance call on Sept. 2. About 200 females were reportedly playing music and talking loudly near Cal State Long Beach’s power plant located by the east turn around. They were “very cooperative” and dispersed within 15 minutes, Solorzano said.
Drop dead drunk
University Police arrested 20-year-old male Warren Bush for public intoxication after he was found sleeping on the sidewalk near the Palo Verde Avenue and State University Drive intersection. Warren was booked at the Long Beach Police Station at 4:39 a.m. and released later that night at 9:27 p.m. with a $250 bail.
iTheft
An iPhone 4 was stolen at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center near the basketball courts. Police said the male student set the $600 phone in one of his shoes after he had changed into his gym shoes. When the student returned to his belongings, he realized that his phone was stolen and called University Police to report the incident.
