At the beginning of the seventh week of classes at Cal State Long Beach, parking in the surrounding community is still an issue.
Signs labeled “Resident Parking Only” are still being spotted at the corner of El Jardin Street and East Anaheim Road — almost a mile from campus.
“We will probably take them down this week,” said Mark Rudometkin, associate director of Parking and Transportation Services. “We have received complaints from that community in particular, so we kept the signs up.”
Although the signs read “Resident Parking Only,” one has been placed by a shopping center on Studebaker Road.
According to Rudometkin, the residents also complained about students parking in the shopping center, so CSULB put up signs to warn students.
“We’re trying to reach out to the concerned community,” said Rudometkin, who explained he understood that students parking in a shopping center is irrelevant to resident parking.
While residents are happy with the placement of the signs, merchants in the local area are not. Tom Mulvihill, who works at Delightful Crepes Café on Studebaker Road, disagrees with the sign’s location.
“The university is out of bounds posting [the signs] there. It is beyond their jurisdiction posting those signs there,” Mulvihill said. “I know someone who was tempted to back into a sign and knock it over in order to make room for parking.”
Mulvihill said he noticed the parking lot in the shopping center ease up more, especially within the last week and a half.
Rudometkin said the university did not hear any complaints from businesses on Studebaker Road, and the complaints he did receive from residents were cordial and polite.
While some residents seem bothered, some are not fazed by the sign, nor students parking down the streets.
“I don’t have any problems,” said Linda Quach, a resident on El Jardin Street.
The Daily 49er first reported the signs Sept. 2, but the university plans on taking them down sometime this week.
