CSULB students to pay ‘tuition’ not ‘fees’

For the first time since the university was founded, CSULB students will have to pay tuition to enroll in classes.

The payments students had to make were never officially referred to as “tuition.”

The CSU Board of Trustees is set to change the terminology of “student-university fees” to “tuition,” putting California on track with the rest of the country.

A major reason for the transition is to accommodate federally funded financial aid, especially after incurring problems with 2009 GI Bill payments.

“It shouldn’t have a direct impact on state-funded financial aid,” said Erik Fallis, CSU media relations specialist. “It may help with federal programs just because of the terminology issue.”

The change will also help for prospective students looking to compare the costs of attending a CSU compared to out-of-state or private universities.

“It was confusing,” senior marine biology major Caitlin Harvey said. “It made it where you didn’t know if it was your tuition or fees for additional classes that you had to take or if it was fees for something like the rec center.”

Fallis insisted that the change would not cause any drastic changes on students or the university.

“It’s a change in the wording,” Fallis said. “It’s not a change in policy. It’s not a change in the approach.”
