CSULB rec center to remain open for winter break

Students battling against the decadence of the holiday season will have extra help, thanks to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Rec center Director Ashley Cappel said the center will stay open with limited hours during the winter break. Its hours of operation are Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students enrolled in the fall are able to use their memberships to the rec center until Jan. 23, the first day of the spring semester. There is no additional fee.

“All of our services are going to be open and it will be a really nice time to bring friends and family to take a tour of the facility,” Cappel said.

Associated Students Inc. runs the rec center. Students voted for the $61 million center in 2007, when they approved an additional student fee of $116 per semester and $88 in the summer.

The center opened at the start of the fall semester, and thousands of students visit it daily. Its facilities include a lap pool, high-tech locker rooms, group exercise classes and a rock climbing wall.

Although many students leave their regular routines behind during winter break, some said they will take advantage of the facilities to fight the overindulgence of the holiday season.

Jose Leanos, freshman pre-nursing major, said he uses the weight room and basketball courts about twice a week. He didn’t know the center would be open during the winter session.

“It’s pretty cool,” Leanos laughed. “Maybe if you feel guilty about binging you can come work out.”

Freshman biology major Matt Blanco works out at the rec center about three times a week.

“I’ll probably go to Big Bear a couple of times, but when I’m down here, I’ll come here,” he said. “There’s times during break when I’ll have nothing to do, so I guess I’ll come work out.”
