Student organization to host barrier-breaking forum

Student organization Headstrong, along with the Sociology Students Association, will host the Unity Forum to help promote diversity within different social groups. It will be held in the University Student Union, Room 306 from 7 to 9 p.m.

According to President of Headstrong Amanda Green, the event will feature six to 10 activities, depending on the time needed to get through them.

Green said the event took place last year as a partnership with Black Student Association.

Christina Fennell, vice president of Headstrong, created the Unity Forum while she was in high school, Green said.

“The event is participant-driven,” Green said. “You get more out of it since you get to share your experiences and hear from other people who come from different backgrounds and groups.”

Green said certain groups try to ease into the harder topics, like those about stereotypes and gender. There will be small discussion groups and large discussion groups.

For example, Green said there was an activity last year where a group sat in a circle. A basket was placed in the middle with slips of paper inside that listed different situations or events. A person pulled one out and, if someone had experienced it within the circle, they stood up and moved to another seat.

“This is a good way to get people eased into the events since there is a lot of movement involved, instead of just raising your hand,” Green said.

Last year, nearly 40 people participated in the event. Green said she is hoping for 30 people or more this year.

Initially, Headstrong planned for a fashion show, but had to replace it for the forum because the student union’s ballroom was not available.

Green said, “I hope that people who do come are excited and are ready to share.”
