SOAR event offers advice, free food

SOAR officials treated students to a free lunch yesterday at an event in the University Student Union ballroom in order to showcase on-campus resources.

Deann Martz, assistant director of STARS/SOAR, said the event was “an attempt to connect students to campus resources.”

According to Ken Kelly, director of SOAR, the event cost about $1,500 and has been going on for nearly eight years. The year-to-year budgets determine if the event is held in the spring semester in addition to the fall semester, Kelly said.

There were about 35 booths set up, including ones for Associated Students Inc., student organizations, University Police and SOAR. University Police gave out safety tips, while SOAR shared information about summer jobs for students.

Students looking for a free lunch were required to get signatures from five different booths after receiving information from each one.

“I learned that I need to set up an advising appointment to make sure I am on track to graduating on time,” said senior Dawn Hamptonie, who also picked up information on a self-defense class available on campus.

The event is typically held four to six weeks into the semester, but was pushed up to the second week to make up for the cutting of SOAR’s mandatory tour, down from a full day to a half day, Kelly said. The increase of incoming spring students forced the tour’s cut.
