Conference to inform about women and careers

The annual Women and Careers Conference, which has been taking place for 13 years, will be held Friday morning in the University Student Union ballrooms from 9 a.m. to noon to provide students with opportunities to meet successful women and gain information about internships and job opportunities.

During the conference, a total of eight women will speak to students about the specific career paths they have chosen. Six of the eight speakers are alumni of Cal State Long Beach.

According to conference coordinator Jeane Caveness, they are hoping about 120 students attend. As of Wednesday morning, 114 were registered. Caveness said that the numbers of students in attendance has ranged between 90 and 150 in previous years. She also said that she hopes some of the promotions implemented this year will draw a bigger crowd.

As far as what to take away from the event, Caveness said she hopes “students will walk away with a new, or renewed sense of direction.” She also said in an e-mail that she wants students to be inspired by the stories from the panelists.

“They will doubtless be inspired by the personal stories of the panelists who faced many crossroads and challenges in their career and life paths,” she said.

The conference is not only for women, but for all students. No matter what his or her background is, Caveness thinks something can be taken away from the conference.

“Whatever a student’s major or current professional aspirations may be, she (or he) will be reminded that there are many options beyond graduation,” Caveness said.

The event is free for any student who registers, which can be done online or by phone.

According to the website, participants can gain even if they only visit for an hour. Register online at csulb.edu/women-and-careers.
