Delta Chi, Greek groups raise cash for charity in a cupcake showdown

Dozens of students flocked to Liberal Arts building 5 yesterday to join in the festivities of the Delta ChiCake Showdown, a philanthropy cupcake competition put on by the Delta Chi fraternity to raise money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

A total of 24 teams took part, including Panhellenic and cultural groups, a group from Long Beach Community College and independent bakers.

Each team presented a dozen homemade cupcakes that they felt best represented their organization. An assortment of different flavors with unique toppings and styles cluttered the tables.

Judges, including Director of Greek Life Catlin Roberts, Associated Students Inc. President James Ahumada and Delta Chi President Andrew Hunter, scored each team’s treats on appearance, creativity and, of course, taste.

“They are all really good,” Roberts said. “So creative and all kinds of flavors. It’s going to be hard to choose a winner.”

This year’s competition was part of Delta Chi’s philanthropy event to raise money for the V Foundation. The event raised more than $900, according to Delta Chi Vice President Joe Dabbs.

“We wanted to go out of the box this year to attract more people,” Delta Chi member Ezra Lee said.

However, the inspiration for this year’s competition came as a result of an unfortunate event.

“We recently had an alumni pass away from cancer,” Hunter said. “We wanted to do this for him.”

Each cupcake cost $2. Those who did not want to purchase a cupcake were able to purchase a paper cutout of a cupcake for a dollar. They then wrote personal messages on their cutouts and stuck them onto the Delta Chi poster hanging above the competition table.

“We wanted to make it more personal with notes,” Hunter said.

At the end of the competition, a winning cupcake was chosen.

The first place winner was “The Churro Cupcake,” a beach-themed cupcake created by Lily Contreras, Arianna Santana and Kayleigh Cook, all members of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Their prize was sponsored cupcakes for their sorority’s next event.

Second and third place went to sorority Alpha Omicron Pi’s cupcakes titled “Pandas” and “Sweet Temptations.”
