Senators discuss stipends, budget

Associated Students Inc. senators discussed their compensations while reviewing the budget on its second and third reading April 27.

The 2011-12 budget does not follow ASI’s policy on stipends.

The ASI stipend policy includes a stipend calculation worksheet, which states that a student would need to work 30 hours a week at $8 per hour in order to be able to pay tuition at Cal State Long Beach.

Senators are required to work three hours in the office and then attend a weekly two-hour ASI meeting for a total of five hours per week. Under the stipend calculation worksheet, senators’ compensations should be $512 a semester, but senators receive $300.

ASI Executive Director Richard Haller said ASI cannot follow the worksheet for budgetary reasons.

The budget was passed on its second reading April 27 with two abstentions by senators. A group of senators and Vice President Lucy Nguyen planned to meet with Haller in an informal meeting Monday to discuss the issue further.
