Actor Robert Wagner will be the guest of honor and master of ceremonies at the Long Beach Port’s 100th Birthday Party, a free event that will be open to the public on June 25.
Wagner narrated the documentary, “Faces of the Port: Celebrating 100 Years,” which documents the history of the port through several first-hand accounts.
Port Media Relations Manager John Pope said that it was important to recognize the milestone because the port has been providing jobs in Long Beach for the last 100 years.
The celebration will recognize truck drivers, engineers, builders, long shore workers and all other laborers for their contributions to the port’s growth over the last century.
“This is a chance to celebrate the past as well as to look to the future of the port,” Pope said.
The celebration will include carnival rides, screenings for the documentary and a concert performance by the Long Beach Municipal Band, which performed at the dedication of the first pier in 1911.
There will also be a photo exhibit that showcases the container port’s history, a truck display and a discussion panel led by maritime reporter George Cunningham.
Local bakeries Rossmoor Pastries and Krista’s Kupcakery will also distribute cupcakes during the event.
Guests are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and lawn chairs.
Free refreshments and hot dogs will be provided by the Long Beach Fire Department.
The event will be held at Pier E on Ocean Boulevard and Pico Avenue, from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Free parking and bicycle valet will also be available.
The House of Representatives recognized the Port’s 100th birthday in April, with a resolution submitted by Republican Laura Richardson.
