U-Pass gears up for school year

U-Pass, a Cal State Long Beach-Long Beach Transit transportation program, resumed Aug 22 with additional and revised routes.

According to LBT Chief Administrative Officer and Senior Vice President Marcelle Epley, the transit system and CSULB have signed a one-year contract, in which the school will fully cover student transportation costs at $525,000.

Revised transit routes will lead to destinations like Long Beach Airport, El Dorado Park Nature Center and other locations in the city of Long Beach.

Passengers are required to swipe a CSULB identification card through the fare box to get access at more than 30 bus stops on and around campus and the city.

“I take [LBT] to the Blue Line,” said junior pre-social work major Bianca Valencia. “I think it’s very convenient how we can use our IDs to ride the bus.”

The free service started as an operational trial for students in Sept. 2008. There are 8,000 student boarders daily.

The changes to the routes are:

Route 104 is a new route that will serve the El Dorado Park and Nature Center on Spring Street between Studebaker Road and Norwalk Boulevard.

Route 102 will serve the Long Beach Airport and connect directly to the Metro’s Blue Line at Willow Station.

Route 101 will operate from Santa Fe Avenue and 25th Street on Civic Center and Joliet in Hawaiian Gardens directly via Carson Street.

Passport A, B, C and D operate from Alamitos Avenue in downtown Long Beach to places like the Long Beach Museum of Art, Belmont Shore, Alamitos Bay Landing, CSULB and the Traffic Circle’s shopping center and restaurants.

Passports A and D will also feature increased service to CSULB and Catalina Landing
