Smorgasport: ‘A night of safe fun’ for students

Free pizza, bowling, billiards and live performances are only a few of the options available to students at the annual Smorgasport this Friday from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. at the Goldmine Gym.

“Our goal is to provide a night of safe fun for our students,” said Christina Esparza, communications coordinator for Associated Students Inc., which runs the event every year.

Smorgasport will take place at the University Student Union game center, the north lawn and Goldmine Gym. Flooded with food trucks, inflatables and vendors, all students and guests are welcome to engage in the festivities.

“We are anticipating a big class since we have a lot more people enrolled this year,” Esparza said. “We are expecting 3,000 students or more.”

Freshmen and transfer students are especially encouraged to come because, aside from entertainment and activities, there will be people to meet and organization booths to visit.

“Smorgasport was the first event I went to as a freshman — I went back as a sophomore, and I can’t wait to go now as a junior,” chemical engineering major Nicole Williams said. “I like how festive it is and how much of a tradition it has become for me and my friends.”

More than 200 clubs and organizations will be present at Smorgasport this year, including intramural sports, clubs, Greek organizations and academic groups, ranging from engineering to liberal arts.

“It is extremely beneficial to have a bunch of us out at Smorgasport,” said Lauren Weiss, vice president of communications for the Sigma Kappa sorority. “We can show our spirit and get our name out on campus even more.”

The event is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Program, the Health Center, Athletics, The Beach Pride Center, Recreation/Club Sports, the USU, and the USU Program Council.
