The Greek Fair and Week of Welcome was a success for Greeks on campus, creating an increased interest in Greek life, according to advisers.
“During the Greek Fair, we had a much larger attendance than we normally do,” said Caitlin Roberts, a fraternity and sorority adviser. “We had nearly 200 men attend on information session for the Interfraternity Council on Tuesday night, and the Panhellenic Council has an increase of more than 12 percent of women registered for their recruitment.”
According to Roberts, the Greek community at Cal State Long Beach has grown to six percent of the student population over the years, up from less than two percent in 2005. Roberts also said that the culturally-based fraternities and sororities saw a significant rise as well, but records aren’t kept on how many people are actually being recruited.
Greeks have been actively trying to recruit during the first few weeks of school with Greek Fair and Week of Welcome.
Most of the events for the sororities and fraternities took place during the evenings over the past two weeks, and house tours were offered this past weekend for sororities. Fall Recruitment Bid Day for sororities will take place Sept. 13, from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
“I didn’t really realize how many fraternities there were until the Greek Fair,” freshman Michael Navarro said. “I didn’t know that it was happening, so when I saw a bunch of people standing at tables and colorful signs across the bookstore, I was pretty surprised.”
Many students crowded over the sororities’ and fraternities’ booths during Week of Welcome, where organizations offered freebies from body mist to free food.
“I’m really thinking about joining a sorority,” freshman Kayse Green said. “My sister was in a sorority and so was my mom, so I think it’ll be pretty cool if I join too.”
