LBPD: CSULB woman sexually assaulted

Two women were sexually attacked in Long Beach on Sept. 13 and Sept. 15, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

A Cal State Long Beach student was grabbed and sexually fondled on Sept. 13 while walking by herself shortly after midnight near the intersection of Clark and Pacific Coast Highway, according to an email sent to CSULB students on Friday from University Police.

The woman was able to fight off her attacker, who fled the scene. The suspect is described as a 5’6,” 140-pound, black-haired Hispanic man between the ages of 18 and 21. He was wearing a light brown shirt with dark gym shorts and dark tennis shoes, police say.

“We strongly urge you to avoid walking alone at night and to always be alert and aware of your surroundings,” Chief of Police Fernando Solorzano said in the email.

Two days later on Sept. 15 at 9:15 p.m., an 18-year-old woman was the victim of an attempted sexual assault while inside a women’s restroom stall at the Liberal Arts Campus of Long Beach City College, according to an LBPD press release.

The suspect reportedly forced his way into the stall and attempted to sexually assault the woman before fleeing. The woman was treated and released from a local hospital for injuries she sustained during the incident.

The suspect is described as a 5’9” black man, between the ages of 18 and 25, with a thin build. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the attack. Detectives from LBPD are releasing a composite sketch of the suspect in hopes that someone may recognize him.

Anyone who may have information regarding one or both attacks is asked to visit the Long Beach Police Department website at longbeach.gov/police and click on “submit a tip.”

CSULB University Police also recommend that students save the University Police phone number, 562-985-4101, in their cell phones in case of an emergency.

“If you believe something is suspicious, do not hesitate to contact University Police immediately,” Solorzano said.
