Students, professors report email problems on Beachboard

Students at Cal State Long Beach have reported problems receiving emails from professors via Beachboard.

Instructional Technology Support Services (ITSS) announced on Sept. 19 that Beachboard was having a software problem related to the delivery of emails.

“We are working closely with the vendor to resolve the matter. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” ITSS said.

Leslie Kennedy, director of ITSS, said the problem is resolved, and the company is working to avoid future problems.

“We are monitoring the delivery and delays of the email, and we keep contacting the vendors every day on these issues,” she said.

Associate professor Andrew Jenks of the history department said he encountered problems with BeachBoard’s email functions.

“I want to keep my records of email in case of protesting grades from students, but they didn’t let me,” Jenks said. “My students got my email days after — up to five days after I sent them out.”

Junior journalism major Steve Han said he also experienced email delays with BeachBoard. He forwarded his CSULB email, or BeachMail account, to his own email address, but didn’t receive emails from his professors because the messages went straight to his spam box.

“I just think it puts too much pressure on the students, especially when the professors send important emails the night or even a few hours before the class,” Han said. “There’s already a lot to prepare for class as is.”

Initially it was external emails that were experiencing delays, according to Kennedy. However, later the software problem had affected everyone, Kennedy said.

Renovation during the summer resulted in Beachboard’s losing its old host Blackboard and switching to Desire2Learn. The changes were made and the new Beachboard was launched in the end of the summer.
