Google launches new online coupon service for locals only

Google recently released an online program called Google Offers, a service that offers discounts daily for locals in Long Beach.

Google Offers is currently only available in Long Beach, Detroit, Sacramento, St. Louis, Fort Worth and Indianapolis via email or Android apps.

Google’s service will face competition from other online bargain-hunters, such as LivingSocial and Groupon.

However, what sets Google apart is, instead of spamming, Google is attempting to only offer deals that seem favorable to the consumer, based ontheir preferences.

“I would definitely use [it] because I use Google like every day, so it would constantly be on my page,” said Mike Chung, a senior English major.

Many students who are fans of Google may turn to use Google Offers as an alternative to Groupon or LivingSocial just because of their familiarity with the tech giant’s other services.

“I guess it’d be more convenient [than LivingSocial or Groupon], and I’ve used Google for a long time so I know how to go around it,” Chung said.

Other students have used Groupon and LivingSocial and are not as likely to switch to Google Offers. The service states that it will base its suggestions on what that person does normally such as frequent movie tickets, spa and salon days and Nascar deals.

“I would probably look at it, even with some of the other ones, they tend to douse you with it — and how many times can you go to the salon?” said Erin Batchelor, a social work graduate student at Cal State Long Beach.

Batchelor said she likes to be surprised by the deals that come her way through LivingSocial or Groupon.

“Those are the things that I do go for, but [I like how] it’s kind of like how Pandora does it, where they suggest music that you might like,” Batchelor said.

Some students consider these deals to be convenient forms of saving money.

“I don’t search them out, but I definitely do consider [the deals] — I don’t just delete them right away,” Batchelor said.
