On-campus dining halls to go through $3 million facelift

Dinning halls at the Residence Commons and Parkside Commons will be upgraded to look more like the dining hall at the Residential Learning College.

According to Housing Director Carol Roberts-Corb, the project will cost approximately $3 million and is still in the planning stage.

The Parkside dining hall will be remodeled in summer 2013, and the Residence dining hall will be renovated in summer 2014.

“We want to update the look and feel of the dining halls to reflect current trends in university dining, and to enhance the menu to accommodate current trends of exhibition cooking and to offer a variety of meal types that appeal to today’s students,” Roberts-Corb said.

Freshman Steven Jimenez is excited to see the dining halls make this transformation.

“Anything that’s new and improved is something to look forward to,” Jimenez said.

Freshman Jeremiah Williams also said that it would be good if the dining halls were remodeled and said he plans to live on campus after the renovations.

“The ones we have now look like they’ve been used for a couple of years,” Williams said.

The new dining halls will feature individual food stations where students can choose from different entrees on the same night. The menus on each night could include Chinese, Mexican and Italian.

Roberts-Corb also said the dining halls are expected to have their kitchens remodeled, and receive new equipment such as televisions so students can watch television while they eat their meals.

Joey Simas, a sophomore chemical engineering major, said he likes the layout of the dining hall at the RLC and he is excited that the other dining halls may look the same.

Junior music major Alexa Rae Lineses Agustin does not really seem to mind the remodeling.

“Some students won’t really care about it because they mainly go there to get food,” Agustin said.
