A reintroduction to campus safety

Students at Cal State Long Beach are urged to reconsider using safety measurements after the recent shooting of two students at University of Southern California.

An email sent out to USC students on April 11 said, “Wednesday morning, April 11, 2012, two individuals, a male and a female, were shot in a car in front of a residence on Raymond Avenue near 27th Street in Los Angeles. The female victim has been identified as a USC student. Los Angeles Police Department responded immediately to the scene and the victims were taken to California Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Names of the victims are withheld pending notification of next of kin. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear.”

The message was sent after police found the bodies of a man and the woman.

Ying Wu and Ming Qu, both 23-year-old international students from China, were killed while parked in a BMW.

The shooting has brought campus safety to light.

Students should be aware of their surroundings at all times, especially while in a parked car.

The best way to avoid being shot is by detecting an unknown person aiming their gun at you before the trigger is pulled.

Students who attend campus at night should always walk with a classmate. Keep an eye out and try to park in different locations from the previous day.

There are many precautions students can consider such as pepper spray, self-defense classes and vigilance.

If at any time students should feel at harm or unsafe at campus, they should immediately contact campus police which can be reached by dialing (562) 985-4101 for non-emergencies and 911 for emergencies.
