No. 8 LBSU holds off Tritons on road

The eighth-ranked Long Beach State men’s water polo team was able to stave off a late comeback by No. 9 UC San Diego in a close 6-5 win on Friday night.

The 49ers (7-6) opened up a three-goal lead in the fourth quarter, but a late UCSD rally fell short to give LBSU the road victory. UCSD dropped to 9-7 with the loss.

Carter Taylor led The Beach with two goals, while goalkeeper Matt Kubeck had a game-high 13 saves. Freshman Nick Rascon scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 7:06 mark of the fourth quarter to extend his consecutive games scoring streak to 13.

The ‘Niners took a 3-2 lead into the half, before building a 6-3 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Matt Farrington, Alexsandr Petrovic and Patrick van der Linde all had one goal apiece for The Beach. Brian Donohoe led the Tritons with two goals, while UCSD goalkeeper David Morton came up with five saves.

LBSU will begin Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Oct. 16 at noon in its first official home game at the Campus Pool against No. 3 UC Irvine.
