The Beach falls in opener

The Long Beach State women’s water polo team opened the 2011 campaign Saturday afternoon with an 11-4 loss to host No. 4 UCLA at the Spieker Aquatics Center.

The 49ers (0-1), who never led in the contest, were paced by goals from Lauren Sieprath, Krizia Cerda, Julie Lantz and Julia Garyfallou. Senior goalkeeper Kristen Stragier made 12 saves.

Trailing just 1-0 after the first quarter, LBSU surrendered three goals in the second frame to UCLA’s KK Clark, who led all scorers. The Bruins took a 5-1 lead into halftime.

UCLA (5-0) pushed its lead to 8-1 in the third before Sieprath’s goal at the 2:20 mark.

The Beach was outscored 3-2 in the fourth to close the match.

The Bruins were paced by Clark’s three goals and a pair of scores from senior Kelly Easterday. Eight different players scored for UCLA.

Bruins junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement made 10 saves through three quarters. Freshman Sami Hill played the fourth quarter and made six saves.

LBSU will return to action with a pair of matches in San Diego. The ‘Niners will face UC San Diego on Friday (6 p.m.) before meeting San Diego State on Saturday (2 p.m.).
