Women’s water polo edged, 9-8

A late UC San Diego goal in the fourth quarter handed the Long Beach State women’s water polo team a 9-8 loss in San Diego on Friday.

After LBSU freshman Julia Garyfallou tied the match at 8 with 2:45 to play, the 49ers picked up an ejection on the following play. The No. 17-ranked Tritons capitalized as Kirsten Bates scored the game-winning goal and completed a hat trick with 2:17 remaining.

The Beach (0-2) was led by Krizia Cerda, Meaghan Leonard and Lauren Sieprath, who each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Kristen Stragier made five saves.

UCSD (3-2) was paced by Bates’ game-high three goals. Goalkeeper Kristen Ostosh made eight saves.

The teams were tied at 5 at halftime, but a pair of third-quarter goals by Bates gave the Tritons a 7-6 advantage going into the final frame.

LBSU will remain in San Diego and face No. 10 San Diego State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
