LBSU wins, widens gap in Big West standings

Box score

With the Big West Conference seedings still up for grabs, the Long Beach State women’s basketball team made a strong case for why it deserves a shot at a postseason berth.

The 49ers used a second-half surge to hold on for a 74-64 victory over Cal State Northridge on Wednesday at the Walter Pyramid.

“We executed better offensively,” LBSU head coach Jody Wynn said. “We moved the ball, made the extra pass, and we knocked down open shots.”

However, the ‘Niners (6-19, 4-7 Big West) remained in eighth place after the University of the Pacific defeated UC Davis on Wednesday. UOP, which has the same Big West record, holds the tiebreaker.

With the win, LBSU extended its eighth-place lead to two games over the Matadors (2-22, 2-9 Big West), who would be the only Big West team to miss the playoffs if the standings hold up through the last five games of the season.

Trailing 31-25 with just over four minutes gone by in the second period, The Beach broke the game open with an 18-0 run.

Senior Courtney Jacob keyed the four-minute surge by going 4-of-5 from the field.

Jacob finished with 28 points and seven rebounds, while Brandi Henton added a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards.

Violet Alama paced the Matadors with 23 points and six rebounds, while Analee Viena-Lota chipped in with 15 points and seven boards.

The Beach will continue Big West action Saturday for a 4 p.m tipoff against UC Davis at the Walter Pyramid. It will also be Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
