49ers fall to top-ranked Stanford

Long Beach State women’s water polo team couldn’t hold on to a first-quarter lead and lost, 11-3, to No. 1-ranked Stanford at the Campus Pool on Sunday.

Julia Garyfallou scored with 2:05 to play in the first quarter to give LBSU (4-9) a 1-0 lead. But in the second quarter, Stanford (14-0) outscored the 49ers, 4-1, to take a 4-2 lead into the half.

The Cardinal continued to pressure LBSU, adding four more goals to take an 8-3 lead into the final frame. Stanford then scored three more times in the fourth quarter, two of which came in the last minute of the game.

Senior goalkeeper Kristen Stagier kept the 49ers close for much of the game, finishing with 10 saves. Chelsea Parks and Lauren Sieprath added goals for the 49ers.

Alyssa Lo led the Cardinal with three goals, while Jillian Garton and Annika Dries scored two goals apiece for Stanford.

The Beach will return to action Friday and Saturday at the Claremont Convergence against opponents yet to be named.
