‘NIners wrap up NorCal Tournament with consecutive wins

The Long Beach State men’s water polo team added two more victories to its record with a 11-8 win over St. Francis and a 16-9 edge over Air Force on Sunday to conclude the final day of the NorCal Tournament in Stockton, Calif.

Sophomore Nick Rascon combined for five goals in the two contests today. He netted 12 goals during this weekend’s tournament, returning to his dominant play from the 2010 campaign.

Senior Aleksandar Petrovic scored five goals in the pair of victories, bringing his season total to 27.

Game One: Long Beach State 11, St. Francis 8

The 49ers outscored St. Francis 7-2 in the second half, including a 3-0 difference in the third quarter.

Rascon totaled four goals in the contest, including three in the crucial fourth quarter. Petrovic put LBSU ahead for good with 5:02 remaining in the game, before Rascon’s three goals sealed the victory for the 49ers.

Rascon’s four goals were a season high for last years All- Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Honorable Mention.

Freshman Hayden Leach and Petrovic joined Rascon as LBSU players to record multiple goals in the contest.

Junior Matthew Kubeck had seven saves.

The victory pushes the Long Beach State record to 8-1, after losing its last two contests in the tournament the day before.

Game Two: Long Beach State 16, Air Force 9

LBSU used a 6-1 scoring advantage in the second period, including five straight goals to build a 9-3 halftime lead.

Petrovic scored five goals in the game, including three in the second half to carry the offensive load for the 49ers.

Six different players reached the scoreboard in the decisive second quarter. Petrovic, Robert Robinson, Joey Fabian, and Dan Matulis scoring multiple goals in the game for LBSU.

Kubeck had nine saves for Long Beach.
