Freshman leads 49ers to victories over Air Force and Pomona Pitzer

The Long Beach State men’s water polo team picked up two victories on the final day of the SoCal Tournament on Sunday. The tournament hosts defeated Pomona Pitzer, 13-7 and Air Force, 10-6.

Freshmen Connor Reilly, Jake Kisher, and John Mroch sparked the team to victory in their first game of the year.

Game One: Long Beach 13, Pomona Pitzer 7

Travis Cleland paced the 49ers with two goals, both in the third quarter, and Connor Reilly netted the first two goals of his career. The other goals were scored by nine different 49ers.

Long Beach jumped out to a quick start leading 6-1 after the first period. Pomona Pitzer never got closer then five goals in the second half, in the runaway victory for LBSU.

John Mroch saved nine shots in his first career game in the net.

Game Two: Long Beach 10, Air Force 6

Dan Matulis, Brian Schiefer, and Reilly netted two goals a piece to lead LBSU to their second victory of the day. Petrovic recorded his 35th goal of the season in the contest, with Nick Rascon and Milos Vrzic adding the other two goals.

The scored was tied 2-2 early in the second period, before LBSU blew open the game to lead 7-3 late in the third period. Air Force cut the lead to 7-6 before Long Beach scored three straight goals to preserve the victory.

Mroch recorded seven saves.

The 49ers will travel to USC on Thursday to face the Trojans at 5:00 p.m.
