Men’s water polo snaps two-game skid

The Long Beach State men’s water polo team snapped its tow-game skid with a 12-7 victory over the Air Force Academy on Sunday in a non-conference match at the 49er Aquatics Center. The 49ers defeated the Falcons for the third time this season.

Sophomore Nick Rascon collected a game-high fours goals to lead the LBSU attack. Freshman Devin Mefford chipped in with three goals.

With the win, the 49ers improved to 14-9, while Air Force dropped to 8-16.

The Falcons pulled to within two at 6-4 before the halftime. Air Force eventually tied the game at 6 with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter before Long Beach rattled off four straight scores to end the period.

The 49ers added two more goals in the fourth quarter to seal the 12-7 victory.

LBSU goalkeeper John Mroch totaled a career-high 10 saves in the match.

Five different 49ers scored for LBSU. Junior Brian Schiefer and sophomore Dan Matulis both scored a pair of goals with senior Aleksandar Petrovic’s lone goal rounding out the scoring.

The ‘Niners will host UCLA (17-3, 3-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) for a conference showdown on Thursday at 7 p.m. in their final home game of the season at the 49er Aquatics Center.
