Men’s water polo uses second-half push to beat LMU

The Long Beach State men’s water polo team outscored Loyola Marymount in the second half to defeat the Lions 14-11 at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Saturday.

Long Beach (16-9) blew open the tight game early in the final period, taking a two-goal lead and extending it to 11-7.

LMU (15-7) trimmed the advantage to 12-9, before both teams added two goals over the last three minutes of the contest.

The 49ers recorded four goals that were tallied by different players in the third period.

The scoring onslaught continued for LBSU in the final period, adding five goals — two of which were scored by sophomore Dan Matulis.

Both teams combined for nine goals in the fourth quarter and 16 over the second half.

Freshman Devin Mefford and the 49ers scored 34 seconds into the first quarter, pacing them for a 3-2 lead at the end of the period.

LBSU scored two more goals by senior Aleksandar Petrovic and sophomore Nick Rascon in the second quarter.

Rascon, Mefford, and Matulis had three goals each, freshman Hayden Leach scored two, and Milos Vrzic scored once. Petrovic scored two goals in the contest, running his season total to 53 with 140 career scores.

Goalkeper Matthew Kubeck recorded five saves for the 49ers.

LBSU wraps up its regular season schedule when it heads to Stockton, Calif. to battle the University of the Pacific on Saturday at noon.
