Men’s water polo team eliminated from playoff contention

The Long Beach State men’s water polo team lost its final Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the year Saturday against the University of the Pacific, 11-6, at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton, Calif.

With the loss, the 49ers were unable to earn a seed in the MPSF Tournament, subsequently giving Pacific the eighth and final spot.

LBSU trailed 3-4 after the first period and was down only two scores at halftime.

However, the Tigers (12-11, 2-6 MPSF) blew open the game in the third period, and led 9-4 entering the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the 49ers (16-10, 1-7 MPSF) were unable to rally and win the game.

LBSU goalkeeper Matthew Kubeck stopped six shots in the contest.

Tigers keeper Alex Malkis had 14 saves in the victory for Pacific.

Sophomore Nick Rascon led all scorers for LBSU with two goals. Brian Schiefer, Dan Matulis, Joey Fabian, and Hayden Leach scored the other goals for the 49ers
