Link, Bullock help 49ers secure No. 2 seed

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team had reason to celebrate Friday as it clinched the second seed for the Big West Conference tournament.

The 49ers (12-4-2, 5-1-1 Big West Conference), who will host the first round of the Big West tournament against Cal State Northridge (11-8-0, 5-3-0 Big West) on Thursday, have appeared in the tournament five of the last six years.

Nadia Link scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season, while Lindsay Bullock tallied a second score to lead The Beach to a 2-0 victory over Pacific (7-7-3, 4-3-0 Big West) at Stagg Stadium.

In a match that produced 35 fouls, Link struck first in the 57th minute as she recovered the ball after a scramble in front of the goal. The sophomore then turned around and fired a shot that dropped into the net.

With the goal, Link ended the Tigers’ season-long shutout streak at home.

Bullock added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when she collected the ball from the left side of the field. She then delivered a strike across the box that caught the inside of the post to seal the victory for the ‘Niners.

Despite being outshot, 6-5, The Beach collected three shots on goal to the Tigers’ one.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough recorded one save in her fourth shutout of the season.

LBSU’s back line denied Pacific’s limited opportunities throughout the entire match.

The Tigers’ best scoring chance of the match came after a foul was assessed in Pacific’s favor. Defender Kylee Ah Choy delivered a free kick that sailed over the crossbar and left Pacific shot-less for the rest of the match.

The only yellow card of the game was issued within the final three minutes of the contest to Pacific defender Brittni Beeman.

The ‘Niners and Tigers each finished the game with six corner kicks.

LBSU returns to Big West action on Sunday as it concludes the regular season against UC Davis (6-9-2, 1-5-1 Big West). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
