In 1957, Dr. Ludwig Spolyar and Bill Lockyer founded Beach Crew as a fun way to bring their friends together. Beach Crew, now known as Long Beach State Rowing, has grown into a distinguished program on campus.

Long Beach State chemistry professor Tom Gufrey resigned just before the start of the 2019 fall semester after a viral video alerted administration of Gufrey’s “dangerous” experiments. Gufrey met with the Daily Forty-Niner staff to conduct a final chemistry demonstration before he parts ways with the university.
