Our View-Spring is in the air, signs on the lawn for 2009 ASI elections

There’s typically a contentious relationship between media and government. That’s the way it’s supposed to be in a democratic society.

Elections not only involve promises made by those seeking an office — the political hopefuls, but requires that somebody — namely the press — records the political campaign promises so the next generation can be certain those promises are carried out to the best of the candidate’s ability.

Student elections, like those underway at Cal State Long Beach next week, are important to the university because they carry implications not only for those on the political catwalk each spring, but also for student government policies that will likely impact future students.

In order to know what candidates have to offer, we are providing each person seeking an executive office — president, vice president and/or treasurer — equal space to publish their campaign statements.

The Students for Students Party decided to publish their statements in a group format, while other candidates will be published as individuals. We also will be publishing statements for Senate and University Student Union board of trustee positions online at daily49er.wpengine.com.

We encourage voters to learn as much as possible about all candidates seeking office, whether it’s for campuswide positions or Senate spots for each college.

Knowing the issues and platforms potential public servants support aids both current and future students in having their needs and concerns met.

Voting will be online via the e-mail you provided to the university from Monday through Wednesday, April 13-15.
