Round 2 suspended as men’s golf tied for 11th

Darkness stopped the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate as the Long Beach State men’s golf team was tied for 11th place on Monday.

Play will resume Tuesday at 7 a.m. Most players have three holes remaining in the second round at the Arizona National Golf Club.

Individually, junior Michael Drake and freshman Kevin Roy are currently tied in 11th, while junior Steve Gibson is tied for 20th, followed by freshman Austin Love (t-64th) and sophomore Ricky Montanez (t-82nd).

LBSU finished tied for fifth place after the first round earlier in the day.

The 49ers shot an 8-over-par 292 along with the University of Arizona.

Gibson paced the ‘Niners with a 1-under 70 score to end the round in a three-way tie for fifth. San Diego State’s David Palm, Darren Renwick of Tennessee and UNLV’s Ji Moon also carded a 1-under score.

Pepperdine’s Andrew Putnam sits atop the leaderboard at 4-under 67. Renwick and the Volunteers lead the team competition at 1-over 285, which is one stroke ahead of Pepperdine.

Gibson made three birdies and an eagle on the 6,785-yard course. Sitting at 2-under entering the 16th hole, he bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 before recovering to birdie No. 18 and end the round.

Action will conclude at the two-day event tomorrow.
