Women’s golf in 13th after second round

The Long Beach State women’s golf team sits in a tie for 13th heading into tomorrow’s final round at the two-day, 16-team Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State.

The 49ers were led by Simone Hoey, the younger sister of former LBSU All-American Kay Hoey. She fired a 3-over-par 75 second round score to finish at par through two rounds on the par-72, 6,250-yard course, finishing the day 16th on the leaderboard.

Hoey started her second round with a par on the sixth hole, but bogeyed the eighth. Her early round struggles continued with a double bogey on No. 11.

She fired back-to-back pars before recovering with a birdie on No. 14. Hoey double bogeyed No. 17 before coming back with three straight birdies on Nos. 18, 1 and 2.

However, she bogeyed holes four and five to close out the round.

“LBSU kicks off the season with a 302 lead by freshman Simone Hoey’s 69,” said first-year head coach Joey Cerulle. “We got off to a good start but fluttered down the stretch. None of our putts were falling. We held it together and plan on making a move tomorrow morning for the final round.”

Sophomore transfer Noelle Zavaleta shot a 1-under 71 second round to post a two-round score of 3-over 75 — good for 28th overall.

Zavaleta teed off her second round on the fifth hole, carding eight consecutive pars before sinking a pair of birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. She stumbled with a bogey on No. 18 and a double bogey on the first.

Zavaleta headed into the clubhouse with a bogey on No. 4.

Brenda Chhuor tabbed a two-round score of 13-over 85, shooting a steady second round until tallying bogeys on four of her last five holes.

Reina Rogers recorded a 17-over 89 through two rounds to place 79th overall heading into tomorrow’s final round. She started with a double bogey on the sixth hole and drained three birdies in the round, including one on the fifth hole to complete her round.

Lindsey McAtee fired a 4-over second round score to finish 10-over through two rounds. McAtee, currently tied for 63rd place, kicked off her round on the fourth hole, sinking birdies on Nos. 5 and 1.

Louisville’s Laura Anderson is the overall leader at 6-under 66. The University of Idaho posted an 8-under as a team to lead the team standings after two rounds.

The final 18 holes will be played starting Tuesday morning.
