The Long Beach State women’s soccer team broke into the national rankings Tuesday as it came in at No. 23 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The 49ers (9-3-1, 2-0 Big West Conference) had been receiving votes for the last two weeks.
It marks the second time this season that the ‘Niners have made their way into the top 25 as they were also ranked 23rd in the first Soccer America poll, which was released on Aug. 22.
The 49ers, which sit atop the Big West Conference standings after the first week of conference play, were the only Big West program ranked in the top 25. UC Irvine, which was picked to win the Big West in a by the conference’s coaches in a preseason poll and was ranked 18th last week, dropped out of the polls after suffering a 3-2 loss at the University of the Pacific and a 2-2 tie at UC Davis.
LBSU was also the highest ranked Big West school in the NSCAA West Regional rankings, coming in at No. 3 overall, behind Pepperdine and Santa Clara.
The Beach, which has remained unbeaten in its five contests, has outscored its opponents, 20-3, during that span. They have also registered a Big West-leading 34 goals and with six regular-season games remaining, they need just 10 more to tie the school’s single-season record set in 2008.
LBSU will return to action this weekend when it hosts Cal State Fullerton in its Big West home opener on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at George Allen Field.
