CSUN ends 49ers’ bid for perfect record in Big West

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak and unblemished record in Big West Conference play end Friday night as it fell to Cal State Northridge, 1-0, at Matador Soccer Field.

CSUN Heidi Farran scored the game-winner (her team-leading sixth goal of the season) in the 89th minute to put the match away. It marked just the second time this season the 49ers have been held scoreless.

Long Beach State (10-4-1, 3-1-0 Big West) finished with seven shots, three of which were on frame. Senior Shawna Gordon and freshman Taylor Nelson both had two attempts, while senior Nicole Hubbard and juniors Jenny Soza and Nadia Link fired off one shot each.

Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gustaves had one save in the loss.

It looked like the two teams were going to be locked in a scoreless tie at the end of regulation, but the Matadors were able to find the back of the net at the 88:23 mark. Katie Russ headed a throw-in to Farran, who then drilled the ball to the lower left corner.

The Matadors (5-7-2, 3-1-1 Big West) totaled 14 attempts with two shots on goal. LBSU held a 4-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Long Beach will look to rebound on Sunday when it makes the short trip to UC Irvine for a 6 p.m. showdown.
